North Coast of Peru (Moche or Chicama Valley), Early Moche Phase I (Moche I / Salinar–Moche transition), ca. 200 BC – AD 100.

Hand-built, reduction-fired and highly burnished blackware ceramic of a seated male figure. The figure is modeled as a seated male in frontal pose, legs folded to the front with exposed bare feet and articulated toes, the right hand resting on the bent knee, the left arm raised (partially broken at the wrist), wearing a distinctive bifurcated "pod-shaped" cap/turban, a long braided hair plait draped over the right shoulder onto the back, circular ear ornaments within large pierced earlobes, and a stylized loincloth at the waist. The facial features are rendered in crisp relief: oval eyes with central raised pupil dots, a strong triangular nose, and a grooved ("smiling") mouth. The entire body and garment surface is covered with densely stippled circular punctations and incised linear borders meant to evoke textile or beadwork patterning. Rising from the back of the head/shoulders is the characteristic closed round arch stirrup spout with flaring rim.

Size 7-1/2 inches (19.05cm) H. Old firing cracks and a horizontal pressure/construction fissure run across the lower body; minor losses to the left hand and small chips to the shoulder.
