North Coast Peru,  Early Phase I, Ca. 200 B.C. to 100 A.D.

Ceramic with cream slip and red-brown painted decoration. A finely modeled squat, bulbous-bodied stirrup-spout vessel decorated on both sides with a bold low-relief coiled serpent featuring a stylized feline head with open, toothy mouth, circular eye, and incised gill-like markings—a powerful image blending serpentine and feline attributes central to early Moche cosmology. The body of the serpent wraps around the vessel in a dynamic coiling composition, its segmented form rendered in alternating bands of cream and red-brown pigment that create a striking graphic rhythm against the smooth cream ground. The classic stirrup spout rises cleanly from the top of the globular body. Scattered light mineral deposits on the surface consistent with burial. Intact and in excellent condition.

The combination of serpent and feline imagery on this early vessel reflects the deep roots of Moche supernatural iconography in the preceding Chavín and Cupisnique traditions, where the intertwining of predatory animal attributes expressed concepts of cosmic power and shamanic transformation.
