North Coast Peru, Circa 900 to 1250 A.D.

A fine and large stirrup, the vessel finely molded with mythological subject matter. The protruding head of a deity with strong and handsome human head, fangs, wrinkles, elaborate crest and spool crown, serpent ear ornaments. Twin molded jaguar cats behind and to the sides below the stirrup spout. In front, the crab creature with sinister supernatural expression. Good painted surface. Some wear. Amazing example of ancient Andean ceramic art.
Size 10 inches H. x 7-1/2 inches deep x 6-3/4 inches width from crab claw to crab claws. Good deposits. Condition: Intact body, repair to claw and spout behind.
