Intaglio Roman, ca. 1st–3rd Century CE; Mount Italian gold ring, Dated 2006
A substantial solid 22-karat gold signet ring of classic Roman form — a tapered hoop widening smoothly into a massive oval bezel — set with an ancient oval carnelian intaglio. The stone, of rich translucent orange-red tone, is finely engraved in intaglio with a winged female deity striding right — almost certainly Victoria (Roman) / Nike (Greek) — her body in near-profile, wings extended behind, holding an attribute (wreath or trophy) in her raised hand and a long palm/staff in the other, with retrograde Latin letters flanking the figure (so as to read correctly when impressed in wax); the visible characters read in part "...HER[...]" on one side and "...ERO" on the other, very possibly the genitive of an owner's name such as HERENNI or HERENNIO. The iconography of Victory holding a wreath and palm is one of the most popular Roman intaglio subjects, circulating throughout the Imperial period and continuing to be set into gold rings of senatorial and equestrian clients from the 1st through 3rd centuries CE.
Weight 30.85 g, 22k; size 9¼, interior engraved "J ✱ V ✱ MMVI" / 2006), ex-NY J.B. private collection
The gold hoop is heavy, hand-wrought, and bears on the interior the engraved inscription "J ✱ V ✱ MMVI", indicating a commemorative date of 2006 consistent with a modern high-karat (22K) Italian-made setting executed to house the earlier stone, a practice common in the ancient-gem jewelry market.
