Classic Period Ca. 600 to  900 AD.

A fragmented applique head, probably from an incensario, depicted with  large circular eye with heavy, raised rings or  “goggle eye” motif of Tlaloc , the Central Mexican rain god.   The projecting snout with tooth-like ridges suggests a mask or zoomorphic mouth, also consistent with later Tlaloc masks and some Teotihuacan rain god heads.  The flat, banded headdress with fine vertical grooves and the small perforation (for attachment/suspension) match mold made ceramic appliqués or small maskettes used on incense burners, effigy vessels, or architectural elements.

Size 1-1/2  inches H  + custom base.

Provenance: Private Mercer Island WA collection by descent from Ruth Goldwyn Capps & Henry McClure Capps (known as Mac) who was an art director and production designer for TV & films in the mid-1950s.
