Ixtlán del Río style, from West Mexico, ca. 200 BCE–300 CE.

This abstractly modeled male figure is rendered in red clay, seated with the body drawn up beneath an elaborate poncho painted with bold geometric designs in cream-white and ochre-yellow slip highlights. He wears a tall conical headdress and large circular ear ornaments, the animated face and exaggerated nose giving him the wonderful personality typical of the best Ixtlán del Río ceramic sculpture.

Figures of this type functioned as funerary offerings, placed in the deep shaft tombs of West Mexico to accompany and honor the deceased; depicting villagers, dignitaries, and elders engaged in daily and ceremonial life, they served as enduring companions and as records of the social world of the living.

The back and side views show the characteristic hollow construction, vent openings, and richly patterned slip decoration extending across the poncho. Condition: the nose and one ear spool have been repaired; the figure otherwise retains strong surface and vibrant remaining pigment consistent with age

Size 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm) in height. .

Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for a closely related Nayarit seated figure of the same shaft-tomb tradition (Met accession comparison).

Provenance: Ex collection George Grossblatt, former owner of Piñata Party, an importer of South American design and fashion into the United States, acquired in the 1960s and by descent to B. Dolinsky, his widow, New York City.
