Classic Veracruz, Gulf Coast of Mexico, ca. 600 to 800 CE

Standing male sonriente ("smiling") figure with the characteristic broad grinning mouth displaying filed upper teeth. The hollow-molded body wears a large beaded necklace and a decorated bra-like pectoral band across the chest. The head features a tall headdress with horn-like projections and applied ear ornaments. The separately made arms are attached at the shoulders with wire pins, allowing them to swing freely — the hallmark articulated construction of the finest Veracruz figures. Traces of original orange-pink pigment remain on the face. A rectangular vent opening is visible at the back of the head, typical of hollow Veracruz figures to prevent cracking during firing.

H. 9 in. (22.9 cm) × W. 3¼ in. (8.3 cm)

Condition: Body with repairs but complete with both original articulated arms. Scattered mineral and surface deposits consistent with burial. Old collection numbers "801" in black ink on reverse of torso. Base label reads "5259-122."

Provenance: Private New Jersey collection; ex-Jaegal Foundation, Baltimore, acquired mid-1960s to mid-1990s. The Jaegal Foundation was a Baltimore-based private collection of Pre-Columbian art that was significant enough to be exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art in a dedicated show titled Pre-Columbian Art from the Jaegal Foundation Collection. The collection was actively built from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s, a golden era for acquiring Pre-Columbian material through established American and European dealers. Pieces from the Jaegal Foundation have appeared in multiple museum exhibitions and scholarly publications, lending strong provenance weight to any object carrying this collection history.
