Eastern Mediterranean (Roman Syro-Palestinian workshops), Circa 1st to 3rd Century AD
A delicate free-blown glass bottle in a luminous pale aqua-blue, the form consisting of a squat bulbous body rising to a cylindrical neck and terminating in an out-turned, thickened disc rim. The vessel retains magnificent iridescence and areas of golden weathering across the body, the result of nearly two millennia of burial.  Small free-blown bottles of this type were among the most common glass forms produced in the workshops of the Eastern Mediterranean following the invention of glassblowing in the 1st century BC. They served as containers for perfumes, scented oils, unguents, and cosmetics used in daily life, burial rites, and ritual offerings throughout the Roman world.

Size: 5 inches (12.7cm)H.

Condition: Intact and excellent; fine earthen encrustation and iridescent weathering; no restoration.

Provenance  Property from a New York City private collection;  Purchased from Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, May 8, 1976, sale 3870, lot 158. Accompanied by the original lot tag and a copy of the invoice.  This documented 1976 American auction provenance places the bottle in the United States for fifty years and well predates all current cultural property restrictions, making it fully eligible for open sale and export.
