Panama, Circa 500 to 1520 AD.

A cast nude figure with arms held at sides and triple spike headdress, perhaps representing feathers. He is further adorned with double spiral ear ornaments, fancy necklace and armbands; a loop hole for suspension behind.

XRF analysis shows it's an 11.0K gold alloy containing gold (46.13%), silver (4.59%), and copper (49.24%), which is consistent with pre-Columbian tumbaga alloys commonly used in ancient American metallurgy. The high copper content is characteristic of this alloy allowed for greater detail in casting while maintaining a golden appearance through surface enrichment techniques.

The figurine displays characteristics typical of pre-Columbian goldwork from Colombia, particularly with its anthropomorphic design, spiral ear ornaments, articulated limbs and ceremonial or ritual appearance

The figurine's design suggests it was likely used as a ceremonial or ritual object, as gold items in pre-Columbian societies were primarily created for spiritual and ceremonial purposes rather than utilitarian use.

Size 6.8 cm H.; 2-5/8 inches H.; 11k; weight 16.5g.

Provenance: From the estate of Andres Illies, who inherited it from his grandfather, Ferdinand Grebien. Mr. Ferdinand Grebien was born in Austria, and arrived in Panama in 1911 to work on the construction of the canal. He founded Grebien & Martinz, a major private construction firm, (with more than 1000 employees) that went on to build many major institutions in Panama, including the Municipal Palace of the District of Colón. Grebien was an avid collector of ancient Pre Columbian gold. Shown in the listing is a photo of Ferdinand Grebien displaying part of his gold collection at the 1964 World’s fair in NY.
