Dan / Mano / Gio Complex, Liberia / Côte d'Ivoire, First half to mid-20th Century
Dense carved hardwood with a deeply encrusted, rich dark brown to black ritual patina and sacrificial/oil libation buildup; Strongly stylized, ovoid/tear-drop silhouette exhibiting pure modernist reduction typical of early Dan secret society mini-masks. Domed, smooth convex forehead transitioning into an incised T-shaped nasal bridge flanked by narrow, deeply grooved horizontal slit eyes. The lower face tapers sharply to a pointed chin with a subtly carved horizontal mouth slit. A smooth, solid convex reverse lacking hollow cavity or rim holes, consistent with pocket/pouch personal fetishes.
Miniature masks of the Dan complex were personal sacred embodiments of spirits (du). Rather than being worn over the face, they were carried in small pouches, worn concealed under clothing, or sewn onto ritual regalia. Served as personal a talisman functioning as spiritual "passport" and protective charm.
Dimensions: 4 inches (10.2 cm) H (excluding custom black iron armature stand)
