Sierra Leone to Liberia

A masterfully carved helmet mask, fashioned from a single block of hardwood with a rich, glossy, blackened surface. Rising from the apex of the sculpture is a fluted, ribbed finial reminiscent of a seed pod or beaded crown, set atop an elaborate coiffure rendered in sweeping, finely striated lobes. Cascading around the sides and back of this hairstyle are carved ridged horns, symbolic of protective medicine charms (duma) and elite braided status, framing the high, bulbous forehead that signifies intellect and spiritual enlightenment. A horizontal band of geometric scarification crosses the brow just above deeply recessed, downcast slit eyes that once allowed the dancer to peer out while projecting modesty and inner composure. Delicate vertical scarification accents the cheeks beside a fine triangular nose and a pursed, silent mouth. Encircling the lower portion are pronounced, fleshy neck rings framed by twisted-rope borders, representing wealth, health, and the concentric ripples formed as the water spirit emerges from sacred river depths. Drilled perforations trace the bottom rim for securing the raffia costume, while softened high-relief edges and subtle contact wear across the dark patina attest to careful preservation and authentic ceremonial handling

Size 17 inches H. repairs and varied patina.

The field photograph captures a lively Sande (or Bondo) society masquerade among the Mende or Sherbro peoples of Sierra Leone, centered on the Sowei (or Ndoli Jowei) spirit dancer. Enveloped entirely in a voluminous costume of blackened piassava raffia fiber that conceals human identity, the masquerader performs in a dusty village square to celebrate female initiation and communal harmony. Surrounding her is a chorus of women adorned in vibrant wax-print wrappers who sing and clap in call-and-response, anchored at the perimeter by seated male drummers and gourd-percussionists providing the driving rhythmic accompaniment. This tradition remains exceptionally rare in sub-Saharan Africa as one of the few masquerades entirely owned, danced, and directed by women to embody the water spirit and ancestral ideals of womanhood.
