West Mexico, circa 300 BCE–300 CE.

Hand-modeled in openwork form, the figure sits with bent legs and tubular arms framing a hollow center, holding an oversized pipe or staff to the mouth. The broad, flat, wide-brim headdress and sharply profiled head give the figure a striking, almost modernist silhouette.

The body is covered in a red and cream slip-painted tunic with vertical striping, now softly muted from age and burial, with scattered mineral deposits emphasizing the ancient surface. The piece is intact, with only minor age-commensurate wear and small losses to the slip, and displays beautifully from all angles.

Height 4 inches (10.6 cm).
Provenance: Ex private Kingston, New York collection, from a prominent long-time collector of West Mexican antiquities.

This compact yet highly sculptural figure is an evocative example of Nayarit shaft-tomb art, ideal for a focused Pre-Columbian collection and an unusually strong unique piece.
