early to mid-1900's

Rectangular plaited rattan warrior’s basket, attributed to the Konyak Naga of Nagaland, India, richly adorned with trophy elements and protective charms. The body is woven in a tight, darkened lattice pattern, slightly tapering toward the base, with a thick braided rattan carrying strap rising from the rim. The upper register is faced with a panel of brown animal fur, onto which are mounted two curved horn trophies (likely from a small wild bovine or goat) framing a central small primate or similar mammal skull, with a second, smaller skull affixed to one side; all elements are secured with vegetal fiber lashings.

Across the front lower section runs a twisted cord or rope of plaited fibers functioning as both reinforcement and decorative band, while an elongated, dark, carved wooden pipe or tubular charm is tied vertically along one corner, projecting downward. The basket and attachments show an overall, evenly oxidized patina with areas of surface wear and minor losses consistent with age and use, particularly to the rattan and fur; the skulls exhibit natural weathering and dark encrustations in cavities. Assembled, the object exemplifies the ceremonial and martial regalia associated with Konyak head‑taking traditions, in which warrior baskets were elaborately embellished with animal trophies, skulls, and personal charms as markers of status and spiritual protection
