Qing to Republic-period production (circa 1880–1930)

A mercury gilt-bronze figure of a wrathful guardian deity or a related armored dharmapāla, standing in alidha posture on prostrate figures and animals on a double-lotus base. The figure is heavily armored, with lamellar cuirass, boots, and fluttering scarves, and stands dynamically with one leg bent and the other extended, a classic martial guardian stance. The ferocious face, flaming red hair, and skull tiara place it among wrathful protectors in the Sino-Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The separate lower plinth with recumbent human and animal, plus the stepped lotus base and oval pedestal with incised crossed-vajra (visvavajra) underside, are all standard for Chinese-produced Tibetan-style bronzes of this type.

The piece appears to be cast in sections and fire-gilded, with the base plate secured by folded tabs and engraved with a visvavajra; the original consecration contents may be intact. Wear to the gilding on projecting areas, dark patina with greenish accretions in recesses, and losses/corrosion to the flaming hair and facial area are visible,

Size 5 inches (12.7cm) Height. Intact.

Provenance: Private Rhinebeck Collection of a Real Estate Developer.

All pieces are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and as described in perpetuity and have been legally acquired and imported in full accordance with U.S. and applicable foreign regulations regarding the movement and sale of antiquities.
