(Chofa / Naga Tail)  Northern Thailand (Lanna); Late 19th to early 20th Century
Hand-carved indigenous hardwood with original layered red, green, and cream polychrome pigments and naturally weathered surface.  Deeply pierced, dynamic volute carving depicting a serpentine mythical serpent/dragon crest (naga / chofa) or stylized celestial plumage (kanok motif). Features interlocking flame-like (lai kranok) leaves, swirling volutes, a central lotus bud rosette, and a dynamic recurved finial tip, terminating in an angled tenon/socket block meant for mortise-and-tenon structural architectural fitting. Originally functioned as an expressive roof ridge finial, eave strut bracket, or decorative gable ornament on a traditional wooden temple (wat), pavilion (sala), or palatial compound.
