An impressive and rare ancient Egyptian carved wood furniture leg, dating to the Late Period, circa 712 to 300 BC. Masterfully sculptural in execution, the upright is carved in the traditional zoomorphic form of a striding feline, likely serving as the forward support of an elite low funerary bier on which a coffin or wrapped mummy rested, or the leg of an exalted offering stool designed to hold ritual items within the tomb chamber. In ancient Egyptian courtly and religious tradition, furniture elevated upon the legs and heads of lions conveyed royal prestige, protective apotropaic power, and solar regeneration. The front of the post terminates at the crest in a boldly projecting lion's head rendered with rounded ears, a pronounced brow, and deep facial planes, tapering down into a sturdy foreleg with carved paws resting on a raised architectural socle over a tapered peg foot. The reverse of the upright retains deep, hollow mortises carved to receive structural tenons for joining the bed's horizontal side rails and corner framing. Measuring 13-7/8 inches in height (35.24 cm H.), and standing 15 inches in height (38.1 cm H.) when displayed upon its included custom armature mount. The piece exhibits natural ancient weathering, grain fissure shrinkage, and age-related surface losses commensurate with antiquity, along with surviving trace remnants of white gesso preparation. For a closely related example in the form of a lion-headed furniture terminal, compare the Egyptian faience bed-leg attachment in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Accession No. 1977.170). Provenance: Ex Harry Wallace Collection, acq 1990s, by descent to DB, New Paltz NY.
