New Kingdom or later, ca. 1550–650 BC

This carved wood figure represents Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, the composite Egyptian god of creation, death, and resurrection. The deity stands in mummiform pose, hands crossed at the chest beneath a tripartite wig, the body sheathed in a tightly fitting shroud. A single column of summarily incised hieroglyphs runs down the front, opening with the royal-offering formula; the worn text appears to name the owner, "the steward Neherti." The figure is mounted on a rough-hewn wood block (a later, non-ancient base).

Ptah of Memphis became closely linked with the city's funerary god Sokar, and in turn with Osiris, producing the composite resurrection deity Ptah-Sokar-Osiris. Mummiform wood figures of this god were placed in tombs as guarantors of rebirth, making this an evocative survival of Egyptian funerary belief.

Height: 15¾ inches (40 cm), excluding base

Condition: Nose lost; surface wear and softening of the inscription; hairline cracks and drying/age checks throughout; later replacement wood base

Provenance: Ex J.P. Collection, Melbourne, FL; acquired from the estate of an archaeologist in the West Village, New York, 2020
