Circa 1st to 3rd Century AD.

A finely cast Roman bronze roundel modeled in high relief with the frontal mask of a lion, its mane radiating in deeply worked locks around an alert, powerfully modeled face. The lion's broad muzzle, furrowed brow, and open, watchful eyes convey the apotropaic strength for which the motif was prized throughout the Roman world.

Decorative lion-head roundels and discs of this kind served as appliqués and protective ornaments on furniture, chariots, coffins, and architectural fittings, the lion functioning as a guardian emblem of power, vigilance, and high status. The present example retains a beautiful olive-green patina with areas of warm earthen deposit, attesting to its antiquity and long burial.

For closely related examples, compare the Roman sheet-bronze lion-head roundel recently excavated bronze lion-head discs from Roman Judea now widely published and in Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Bronzes in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, by M Comstock & C Vermeule, MFA 1971, no. 673.
