Roman Imperial, ca. 1st–2nd Century AD

A sensitively carved Roman marble head depicting a handsome young boy with idealized, Eros-like features, sculpted from fine crystalline marble. The youthful face is rendered with naturalistic softness — full rounded cheeks, a gently rounded chin, and a small parted mouth — framed by short, tossed locks of hair that fall in lively, naturalistic curls. The eyes are tenderly modeled with drilled pupils, a technique that became prevalent in Roman portraiture from the 2nd century AD onward and lends the gaze a soft, lifelike expression.

Idealized heads of boys and Erotes were among the most beloved subjects of Roman sculpture, decorating villas, gardens, and funerary monuments, and frequently derived from celebrated Hellenistic prototypes of the 3rd–2nd centuries BC. The present head, with its serene expression and Praxitelean softness, beautifully embodies this refined tradition.

The marble retains a warm, lightly weathered surface with golden-tan earthen deposits and the expected wear from antiquity; the reverse and one side show old surface losses consistent with the head's age and burial, while the face is finely preserved.
