Ecuador, Regional Development Period, circa 500 BC/AD 

Modeled in buff earthenware with a striking face and neck cords denoting his rank and ritual authority, seated nude, frontally on a separately modeled bench with his hands gesturing together in the manner of a figure in ceremony. He wears an applied bag wig gathered at the crown, multiple strands of appliqué necklace and cords draped across the chest, a prominent circular lip plug, and ear and nose plugs/ornaments, all attributes marking him as a personage of high status within Jamacoaque society. The banded coil decoration wrapping the wrists, upper arms, and both legs echoes the beaded or woven bindings seen on comparable high-status seated figures of the period, and the surface retains scattered traces of the original slip and pigment along with earthen encrustation consistent with burial. 
Size: 10-1/2 in. in height, with multiple losses and visible repairs.

The figure compares closely with the Jamacoaque seated figure in the Brooklyn Museum (acc. 76.166.2, 14-3/4 in.) and with the seated bench figure illustrated in the Walters Art Museum's collection, both representative of the type discussed by Alan Lapiner in Pre-Columbian Art of South America and by Francisco Valdez in Amerindian Signs: 5000 Years of Pre-Columbian Art in Ecuador.
