Late Period, ca. 664–332 BC

Finely carved fragmentary head of a sacred baboon, worked in dense dark basalt with a smooth, time‑worn patina. The animal is rendered in a compact, blocky style with rounded eye pupils drilled in shallow relief, carefully indicated muzzle, and pierced nostrils, the lower neck sheared away on a diagonal break. Baboons were closely associated with the god Thoth and venerated as embodiments of wisdom and solar worship, and small hard‑stone images such as this likely derived from larger devotional figures and temple furnishings.

For a comparable basalt baboon sculpture, see G. Steindorff, Egyptian Sculpture in the Collection of the Walters Art Gallery, no. 218 (for type and stance).

Size: 2 5/8 in (6.7 cm) high; 3 1/2 in (8.9 cm) diagonal length; set on a modern wood or plexiglass display mount.

Condition: Fragment of a larger figure, broken across the lower neck; minor edge chips and surface wear; overall dark brown‑black patina with lighter mineral accretions in recesses and on the break surface, as shown.

Provenance: Richard B., Park Avenue, New York collection, acquired in the early 1970s; thence by descent or sale to the present owner.
