An exquisite pair of ancient Greek Hellenistic gold earrings, Eastern Mediterranean, dating to circa the 3rd to 2nd century BC. Each earring is expertly fashioned in the classic spiraled hoop form, featuring a hollow, spirally wound and twisted gold wire body that tapers from a flared animal-headed terminal at the front down to a slender, smoothed wire point designed to pass directly through the earlobe. The terminals are masterfully rendered as sculptural lion heads, hand-chased and repoussé-worked with expressive facial features, almond-shaped eyes, indented nostrils, and radiating textured manes. Behind the nape, each head joins the coiled hoop via a decorative sheet-gold collar embellished with applied wire filigree scrolls and palmette-like tongues framed by beaded or twisted wire borders. Accompanied by an XRF elemental analysis report confirming an ancient high-purity alloy composition of approximately 20.2K gold (84.42% Au, 8.01% Ag, 2.74% Cu, 4.83% Fe) with no modern plating detected. Measuring each approximately 5/8 inches long (1.4 cm L.), with a combined total weight of 1.53 grams. Both earrings survive intact and in an exceptional state of preservation, exhibiting a deep, radiant golden hue accented by attractive earthen deposits in the recessed crevices of the collars and manes. Provenance: German private collection, formed prior to the 1980s.
