Hellenistic Period, Ca. 3rd to 2nd Century BC.  This is a small mold-made terracotta head of a woman, characteristic of Greek Hellenistic production of the Tanagra / Tanagrean type. The piece is  fragment at the neck, likely broken from a complete standing draped female figurine.  The head displays the hallmarks of the Tanagra tradition: a softly modeled oval face with small closed-lipped mouth, delicate nose, half-lidded downcast eyes conveying the introspective "melancholic gaze" typical of these figurines, and wavy hair center-parted and drawn back toward a chignon or bun at the nape. The orange-red fabric retains traces of cream/white slip ground and faint pinkish pigment on the flesh areas — consistent with the standard Tanagra polychromy scheme in which the face was painted pale peach and the hair red. A visible seam at the crown indicates bivalve-mold manufacture, the standard coroplastic technique at Tanagra, Boeotia, and regional workshops in Myrina, Smyrna, and South Italy.
