Costa Rica or western Panama, Ca. 800 to 1500 CE.

Worked from a rich high karat gold alloy, this striking pendant shows a boldly abstract anthropomorphic‑avian figure: a broad Y‑shaped body spreads into two powerful lower elements, while the flaring crest above and the intricate, cast cluster of small rods at the center suggest head, wings, and ceremonial regalia; Loop hole for suspension behind. The piece was likely worn as an elite chest ornament and would have caught the light beautifully when suspended on a cord or fiber collar.
Recent X‑ray fluorescence testing by Manhattan Gold and Silver Inc. in New York confirms a premium tumbaga composition of approximately 76.61% gold, 7.61% silver, and 15.78% copper (about 18.3k gold), entirely consistent with classic pre‑Columbian goldwork from the Costa Rica–Panama isthmus.
Size: 3 5/8 inches (9.2 cm) wide by 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm) high; weight: 16.11 grams.

Beautiful variegated patina with areas of rich yellow‑gold sheen, scattered burial encrustations, minor edge losses to the crest, overall a very attractive example of Central American goldworking at its height.

Ex R.H. New York & Palm Beach Collection, now by descent to current owners.
