Late Predynastic to Early Dynastic Period, ca. 3300–2650 BC

A luxurious finely carved jar carved from banded travertine (Egyptian alabaster) in cream, buff and honey tones. The body is ovoid with broad shoulders and tapers to a narrow flat base. The neck is short and the rim flat and everted. Two pierced lug handles sit on the shoulders. The interior is hollowed out with precision.

Made for storing oils, unguents or foodstuffs, and placed in a tomb as an offering of sustenance. The surface is weathered and pitted, with natural voids and solution holes in the stone; minor losses and chips at the rim, small losses at the foot and a chip to lug, and earthen staining overall.

Size: 5 inches (12.7 cm) H. x 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) Diam.
