Ghana, mid 20th Cent AD.

This figure is a Fanti (Fante) carving from Ghana, part of the Akan cultural group. The Fanti, like their Akan relatives, are known for their wood sculptures, which often serve ritual, symbolic, or commemorative purposes

Bold and graphic, he stands on a sculpted orb with projecting cone-shaped elements, the person with simple body, short outstretched arms, ringed neck, and sensitive facial features that include arched brows, delicate nose, open mouth with teeth, and spiked hairdo. Contrasting areas of black and tan coloring, as well as areas of textured and smooth burnished surface; possibly the handle of a ceremonial knife or from a staff, which would signify the owners power and authority.

Some minor damage and losses as evident in a varied patina.
