West Mexico, dating to the Protoclassic period (ca. 100 B.C. – 250 A.D.),masterfully carved from a dense, mottled deep blue-green serpentine into a compact, sculptural block form. Depicting a seated male resting his hands against drawn knees, the carving displays hallmark West Mexican lapidary traits, including hollow-reed drilled circular eyes, an incised headdress band, flaring pierced ear ornaments, and deeply drilled openwork perforations beneath the arms that release the torso into smooth, tactile three-dimensionality. Measuring 2-3/4 inches high by 2-3/8 inches wide, the figure remains intact and in excellent condition with a soft, waxy polish, retaining an old gold-foil collection label to the reverse alongside distinguished New York provenance that traces through the Curtis Katz collection (1968–1969), The Bactria Corp. (1970s), and the Edward H. Merrin Gallery (1970s).
