Canada, Cape Dorset, Baker Lake, or Pangnirtung, Late 20th Century AD

Inuit soapstone carvings are traditionally hand-carved from locally sourced soapstone, a soft and workable metamorphic rock often found in the Canadian Arctic. The artist uses simple tools to sculpt and polish the stone, resulting in a characteristic smooth finish with visible tool marks and areas of natural mineral inclusions. The distinct white speckling in the stone is typical of some varieties of Canadian soapstone and adds visual interest.

The subject here is robustly modeled and evokes a sense of protection and warmth, fitting themes commonly found in Inuit sculpture; especially scenes of maternal care or family life.

There are incised markings including numbers and what appears to be an artist's identification or catalog number, as well as a gold label which may reference a previous gallery, museum acquisition, or the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, which supported and documented Inuit art sales. The markings dated "1979" suggest this carving was made or cataloged in that year, placing it in the period when Inuit art was gaining international recognition and works were regularly catalogued for export or auction.
