Eastern Mediterranean, Syro-Palestinian / Levantine coast, Circa 3rd–5th Century CE
Late Roman to Early Byzantine blown-glass cosmetic bottle or unguentarium of heavy, thick-walled construction. The vessel features a wide, funnel-shaped everted mouth with a rounded lip set above a short, pinched neck ring/collar. The conical upper body gently expands toward a substantial lower section adorned with a thick, applied coil of glass crimped into a prominent wavy "rigaree" or pinched scalloped fringe. The vessel rests on a solid, flat-to-slightly concave basal pad displaying a rough central pontil scar. The entire exterior is enveloped in a thick, encrusted dark earthen and silvery-gray burial patina with heavy weathering, calcification, and subtle underlying iridescence typical of Levantine finds.
Size 3 inches H.
Provenance: Mr. Sid Hart, Cos Cob, Connecticut, acquired 1980s–1990s.
