Classic Period, ca. 600–900 A.D.

A finely modeled Maya terracotta head from a figure or figural vessel, the expressive face with almond eyes, broad nose, and full lips, framed by large circular ear spools (ear flares) and surmounted by an elaborate headdress or coiffure. The naturalistic modeling and prominent ear ornaments are characteristic of Classic Maya ceramic portraiture, evoking the elite individuals depicted on figural vessels of the period. Presented on a custom display mount. 

Dimensions: 2¼ in. H × 2⅜ in. W (5.7 cm H × 6 cm W), excluding base

Condition: Fragmentary (head from a larger figure or vessel); nose damage, surface wear, mineral deposits, and old breaks consistent with age.

Provenance: Private Mercer Island, WA collection, by descent from Ruth Goldwyn Capps and Henry McClure "Mac" Capps, an art director and production designer for television and film in the mid-1950s
