Classic Period Circa 550 to 800 AD

Classic iconography, this hand modeled seated male figure represents an elite personage in his robe, large beaded and pectoral necklace and turban. These elements of costume identify him as a court noble.  It is thought that these figurines are portraits of the lords and ladies of Maya courts, and in the northern Maya area. See Schele L. et. al. "Hidden Faces of the Maya). Many such figurines are  intended to help the deceased call for spirits and ancestors in the afterlife. 

Size: 6 in. Height + black metal plinth base.

Condition: Repairs to body through shoulders and missing right hand, repair to other.
 
Provenance: Private Mercer Island WA collection by descent from Ruth Goldwyn Capps & Henry McClure Capps (known as Mac) who was an art director and production designer for TV & films in the mid-1950s.
