North Coast of Peru, Late Intermediate Period, circa 1000–1250 A.D.

An authentic pre-Columbian Chancay false-head or mummy-bundle mask carved from a single wood plank. The expressive face is painted in vivid red-pink pigment with a relief-carved projecting nose and recessed diamond-shaped eyes accented in dark brown and white. The mask retains its original applied human-hair wig and tied textile headbands woven with red, gold, and brown geometric banding—a rare survival rarely found intact. Small drilled holes along the edges once secured the mask to a mummy bundle, where such "false heads" gave the deceased a serene, eternal visage for burial. Mounted on a custom museum-style stand for display.

Provenance: Private Brooklyn collection; ex Sidney and Gae Berman collection, New York City, 1970s
