 North Coast Peru, Period: Late Intermediate Period, c. 1000–1470 AD

A fine ancient Peruvian textile band fragment displaying exceptional color preservation, structure, and geometric iconographic design. Woven from natural unbleached cotton and dyed camelid fibers, the main decorative field features a three-tiered checkerboard grid pattern populated by repeating, stylized, profile sea birds. The avian figures alternate orientation across the squares in brilliant shades of magenta/crimson and ochre yellow against dark chocolate-brown and cream backgrounds.

Framing the central field are bold horizontal bands of solid magenta, deep brown, and natural tan weave, terminating in delicate fringe along the lower salvage edge. The repeating blocky bird iconography directly mirrors the famous architectural adobe friezes of Chan Chan, the imperial capital of the Chimu Kingdom.

Carefully mounted on a neutral linen-covered board and set into a custom clear acrylic box frame. The panel visually floats within the mount, offering protection while presenting a clean, modern aesthetic for contemporary display and study.

Provenance: Ex collection Mr. Sid Hart, Cos Cob, Connecticut, acquired in the 1980s–1990s; thence by descent.
