This "Mezcala Standing Stone M-24 Axe God Figure" from Guerrero, Mexico, dating to approximately 100 BC to 250 AD, is an impressive example of the region's distinctive ancient artistry. Standing at an impressive 7-1/4 inches (approximately 18.4 cm) in height and 3-3/4 inches (approximately 9.5 cm) in width, this voluminous, carved speckled gray-green serpentine figure captures the essence of a revered spiritual leader. The idol is depicted standing with both hands held to its stomach, and features a wide head with angular carved facial features, all characteristic of the Mezcala M-24 type. The M-24 type is part of Carlo T. Gay's widely accepted classification system for Mezcala figures, representing a more advanced stylistic development where artisans achieved a greater degree of articulation and detail while maintaining the culture's signature minimalist aesthetic. Its intact, excellent condition, further validated by authenticating surface encrustation, underscores its remarkable preservation over millennia. The piece boasts a well-documented provenance, having been part of a private Florida collection, previously with Barry Kernerman of Toronto, and before that, from the esteemed Samuel Dubiner collection in Tel Aviv, Israel, acquired in the 1960s. This figure is not merely an aesthetic object but a significant cultural artifact, representing a tradition of abstract stone sculpture believed to have served as votive offerings or grave goods, offering invaluable insights into the spiritual beliefs and artistic ingenuity of the ancient Mezcala people.
