Eastern Mediterranean ca. 2nd to 4th Century AD

Blown pale blue-green glass flask, the pear-shaped body and tall neck with swirling spiral ribs, set on an applied pad foot. Funnel mouth with rounded rim. Two trailed handles rise from a coiled collar at the base of the neck to the rim, each ending in a pinched loop, with a small applied disc beside the rim on one side. Designed to store aromatic oils, balsam, unguents, and liquid cosmetics. Because perfumes and scented oils in antiquity were oil-based (often olive, sesame, or moringa oil bases infused with myrrh, frankincense, or floral essences) and costly, the narrow elongated neck restricted evaporation and allowed for controlled pouring or extraction one drop at a time. Intact; burial encrustation and iridescence.
