A serene and beautifully cast Sukhothai-period bronze head of Buddha, Thailand, circa 14th–16th century AD. The face embodies the spiritual ideal of Thailand's "Golden Age": a symmetrical oval visage with heavily lidded, downcast meditative eyes, gracefully arched brows meeting in a continuous ridge above a thin aquiline nose, and fleshy, softly outlined lips set in the faint inward smile characteristic of the period. The cranium is covered in tightly coiled snail-shell hair curls rising toward the (now-lost) flame finial.

The bronze retains a rich, mottled reddish-brown excavated patina with remnants of black lacquer highlighting the hair, evidence of its original surface treatment and considerable age. A superb example from an early and comparatively rarely seen period of Thai Buddhist sculpture.

Dimensions: 8 in. (20.3 cm) H., plus presented on a custom display mount.

Condition: Good excavated condition, with losses to the ears, finial, and some hair nodes at the sides — consistent with age and burial

Provenance: The collection of Jane and Jack Weprin, New York City; acquired 1970s–1991, thence by descent to the family.
