West Mexico, Guanajuato, Late Preclassic/Formative ca. 500–200 BC
A charming pair of miniature solid pottery seated female figures, each shown with hands brought to a rounded, plump stomach — an evocation of fertility characteristic of Chupícuaro figural art. Both retain a lustrous red slip ground enlivened with bold cream and black geometric ornament in the stepped/zigzag patterns typical of the tradition, with applied "coffee-bean" eyes and pierced ear ornaments. Their small scale and matched form make them an especially endearing pair.
Dimensions: 2-1/8 in. high each
Condition: Both intact and well-preserved with vivid surviving pigment, a bit enhanced in modern times.
Provenance: Estate of Patsy R. Taylor, Greenwich, CT, acquired 1960s–1970s. This documented, named American estate provenance with an acquisition window largely pre-1970 is an excellent asset for Mexican antiquities.
