A hollow ceramic figure of a kneeling matron, originating from the shaft tomb tradition of West Mexico, dating to the Protoclassic Period, circa 100 BCE to 250 CE.
Modelled in the classic Ameca-Etzatlán style, the matriarch is portrayed kneeling upright on folded legs, her torso bare with naturally modelled breasts above a low-slung, red-slipped wrap skirt. Her elongated head features cranial deformation emphasized by a smooth crest headdress or cap, prominent rectangular tabular ears, deeply rimmed almond-shaped eyes, an aquiline nose, and an open, parted mouth showing individually articulated teeth as if frozen mid-chant or vocalizing a ritual incantation. In her extended right hand, she thrusts forward a pointed ceremonial gourd rattle, while her left arm reaches outward with an open, flattened palm displaying incised fingers in an expressive gesture of invocation, dance, or shamanic benediction.
The figure measures 15 inches in height by approximately 8.5 inches in width and 10 inches in depth (38.1 cm x 21.6 cm x 25.4 cm). The hollow terracotta surface is hand-burnished and coated in variegated reddish-brown, buff, and mottled charcoal-grey to black manganese slips, enriched by authentic dendritic mineral blooms and fine subterranean earthen encrustations throughout. The sculpture survives in very good structural condition, expertly reassembled from approximately seven large ancient fragments, with discreet, stable conservation and light cosmetic restoration blended across the break lines.
