Nigeria, Nok culture (Sokoto/Katsina style), circa 500 BCE–200 CE.

This handsome and dignified bust is modeled in a grog-rich, gravel-tempered clay in the bold, schematic idiom of the Nok-related sculptural traditions of northern Nigeria. The face is distinguished by heavily laden, hooded lidded eyes beneath sharply incised brows, a wide pierced nose, and a slightly open mouth framed by a stippled beard rendered in raised dotting—all hallmarks of the bearded male type associated with the Sokoto and Katsina styles. Coil-built and hollow in the manner characteristic of Nok-tradition terracottas, the piece shows its considerable age through stable cracks, surface losses, areas of exposed core, and a weathered, root-marked archaeological surface.

Size 13 inches (33cm) high and is presented on a custom mount.

Provenance: Ex collection Joseph Knopfelmacher (Craft Caravan), New York, acquired in the 1970s to 1980s.

Cf. the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the British Museum, London (e.g., Af-B62-4), for Nok and Nok-related terracotta heads of bearded male type with hooded eyes and stippled detailing, ca. 500 BCE–200 CE.
