Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664–30 BCE.

The narrow vertical format, use of bright blue, yellow, red, and white over gesso, and the arrangement of winged motifs and deity profile are all characteristic of late Third Intermediate–Late Period coffin sides, a tradition that continues with little change into early Ptolemaic pieces.  The decorative program is a standard Late Period coffin side showing a protective winged goddess flanking the mummy, framed by patterned borders.

From top to bottom, you have stacked registers of outspread wings with feather detailing, almost certainly belonging to a goddess such as Nephthys or Isis shown in profile. The central scene shows the goddess kneeling or seated with wings extended, facing toward the right, in a position of protection and adoration. Above and below are horizontal bands with alternating triangular elements (a “toothed” or chevron frieze) that serve as framing devices, and there is likely a vertical border element at the center that once separated this panel from an adjacent scene on the coffin. The overall iconographic intent is protective: the winged goddess encloses and guards the deceased within a decorative framework of wings and geometric bands.

Size 16 1/2 inches H. x 3-7/8 inches wide;  20 inches x 6 inches  mounted on a plexi stand.

Condition: wear to painted surface as well as stable age cracks and loses;  details in bright bold original colors.
