New Kingdom, ca. 1550–1070 BC

A rare Egyptian banded calcite-alabaster jar of true luxury quality, dating to the New Kingdom. Skillfully carved with thin, translucent walls that glow when backlit, the vessel was once fitted with twin arched handles, each flanked by finely modeled ibex heads. The animal heads are pierced at ear level for separately made, inserted horns, evidence of an elaborate, multi-part luxury composition.

The warm, honey-toned stone shows beautiful natural banding, prized in antiquity for both beauty and translucency. Though it now bears losses to the rim and one handle, the piece retains its sculptural presence and the unmistakable refinement of an elite Egyptian commission. A spectacular survival from one of the great ages of Egyptian stoneworking.

Height: 6¼ inches (15.9 cm)

Condition: Damage and losses to rim and handle; surface wear consistent with age; remarkable translucency intact

Provenance: Ex Collection of Jay I. Kislak (1922–2018), Miami, Florida. Jay I. Kislak was a prominent American businessman, philanthropist, and collector whose holdings of antiquities, rare books, maps, and art of the ancient Americas and the wider ancient world were among the most distinguished in private hands. A noted benefactor of cultural institutions, most prominently the Library of Congress, which houses the Jay I. Kislak Collection of materials relating to the early Americas.  Kislak assembled his collection over decades with scholarly care and a connoisseur's eye. Objects bearing the Kislak provenance carry the assurance of a serious, well-documented private collection.
