Apulian Red-Figure Ribbed Spherical Pyxis

Magna Graecia, South Italy, ca. second half of the 4th Century BC

An exceptionally fine Greek South Italian terracotta spherical pyxis composed of two complementary hemispherical elements: a domed lid surmounted by an architectural knob finial, and a deep lower bowl resting upon a tall, stepped pedestal foot. The lid is elaborately decorated in red-figure technique accented with lavish added white and yellow-ochre pigments, centered around a profile head of the celebrated Apulian "Lady of Fashion" or winged Nike facing left. The goddess is framed by outspread wings meticulously detailed with dotted feathering, her hair gathered in an embroidered, patterned sakkos crowned with a radiate stephane (tiara), drop earring, and beaded necklace. The reverse is dominated by an expansive, elegant palmette fan flanked by scrolling volutes and tendrils. In pleasing contrast, the lower hemisphere is coated in a lustrous black glaze and articulated with sharp vertical ribbing, framed just below the carinated rim by painted horizontal white fillets. Intended for cosmetics, unguents, or jewelry, vessels of this refined form and iconography were prized bridal gifts and symbols of Aphrodisiac beauty in late classical Magna Graecia.

Dimensions: Height: 7 3/8 in. (18.7 cm)

Condition: Lid professionally repaired from large original fragments with hairline joins and minor surface wear; no real restoration, overpainting, or modern fills. The ribbed lower vessel and pedestal foot remain intact, retaining strong glaze sheen and minor burial encrustations.
