Late 6th to early 5th century B.C.,

A votive oil vessel of tall slender form with cylindrical body on a disk foot, narrow neck with flaring mouth, and strap handle, the reserved shoulder with radiating strokes below the neck and a double line and dotted frieze. The body is decorated in black-figure technique with added red and white, showing a standard chariot scene: quadriga moving right with charioteer and attendant figure, the figures enlivened by incision and added color that creates an unusually rich, near “tricolor” effect; below runs a zone of reserved and glazed bands around the lower body.

Size 7¾ in. (c. 19.5 cm) Height. Comparable black-figure lekythoi with chariot or race scenes are preserved in Princeton, LACMA, RD Milns Antiquities Museum and major collections such as the Getty Museum.

Condition: Repair at neck and handle; surface wear and with areas of misfiring, surface encrustation and minor losses.

Provenance Mr. Tony D., Cannonville, Utah Acq 1970s.
