Ecuador, Circa 550 AD.

Modeled as a projecting human face framed by an impressive, fan‑shaped headdress, the broad plaque worked in high relief with multiple concentric bands of incised scrolls, raised bosses, and geometric motifs that evoke plaited textiles and beaded ornament, hallmarks of Bahía headdress representation. The central face is rendered in a strong profile with coffee‑bean eyes, pronounced nose and chin, and large circular ear ornaments; perforations at the ears and along the upper border likely served for the attachment of additional elements or for suspension, indicating use as an architectural or funerary applique rather than a wearable mask.

Size: 6 in (15.24cm) (mask height); 7 1/2 in H on custom mount.

Compare: Alan Lapiner, Pre-Columbian Art of South America, nos. 785–794, for related Bahía headdress plaques and masks.

A strong sculptural rendition with good mineral and earthen deposits overall.

Provenance: Private collection R. & B. S, New York and Palm Beach, assembled in the late 20th century. By descent within the same family to the present owners.
