Ecuador, circa 500 BC/AD

Modeled in buff earthenware as a hollow figure wearing a sweeping crested helmet or headdress rising to a pointed peak at the crown, the wide, gently downturned brim framing a broad modeled face with heavy-lidded eyes, a straight nose, and a serene closed mouth, the ears fitted with  disc ornaments and the neck framing a pendant necklace. The figure is seated with both arms bent forward, hands meeting at the lap in a gesture echoing the ceremonial poses common to high-status Bahía personages, and behind is open with a vent at the back of the headdress. Pigment remains in patches of buff, ochre, and smoke-blackened gray across the torso and reverse, consistent with post-fire painted decoration that has worn unevenly with age and handling, and the surface shows earthen encrustation and minor edge softening but no losses to the principal features or restoration.
Size 6-3/4 in H.; 8-5/8 in on black block base.

Compares  with a hollow Bahía Seated Figure in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1988.117.8, 20 in.), both sharing the type's characteristic cap or crested headdress and broad, serenely modeled face documented among high-status Bahía ceramic figures of Ecuador's Manabí coast.
