Western India (Rajasthan/Gujarat region),  Circa 12th–15th Century

A finely carved sandstone head of a Jina, the enlightened liberator (Tirthankara) of the Jain faith, sculpted in the devotional tradition of Western India. The serene, fleshy face is modeled with downcast meditative eyes beneath gently arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips drawn into the faint, inward smile that conveys the kevala-jnana — the state of pure omniscient knowing and liberation from worldly delusion. The hair is rendered in tight rows of snail-shell curls, and the elongated, pendulous earlobes recall the princely life renounced upon the path to enlightenment.

The absence of a Buddhist-style ushnisha cranial protuberance, together with the meditative frontality and idealized smooth planes of the face, identifies this head as a Jina rather than a Buddha. Such heads originally belonged to standing or seated cult images installed in Jain temples across Rajasthan and Gujarat, where Tirthankara worship flourished from the medieval period onward.
