Northern Mexico (Chihuahua), Paquimé / Medio Period, c. 1200–1450 A.D.

A handsome Pre-Columbian Ramos Polychrome olla from the Casas Grandes culture, hand-coiled and -burnished in the characteristic buff-to-cream slipped earthenware of Paquimé, of classic globular form with a low rounded shoulder, short flaring neck, gently everted rim, and a rounded base. The exterior is painted in the canonical three-color Ramos Polychrome palette; deep matte black and iron-red mineral pigments on the natural cream slip,  and organized in a continuous, bilaterally-balanced panel composition around the body.

The primary design band is divided by vertical framing columns (triple parallel lines) into four panels of alternating motifs: (a) large stepped "lightning" / terraced scroll forms with red triangular infill, and (b) open scroll/hook motifs with red-accented flanking bars. The shoulder and neck are bordered above and below by neatly ruled horizontal framing lines in black. The composition is executed with the confident, slightly loose brushwork typical of mature Ramos Polychrome production at Paquimé.

Dimensions
Height 6 ½ in. (16.5cm)  diameter 8 in. (20cm).
