 Mexico or Guatemala, mid 20th century

 A carved wooden face mask with strongly modeled skull features, the high rounded forehead above deeply recessed eyes, a prominent nose and sharply projecting lips giving a dramatic, almost caricatured expression; the surface decorated with black and white pigment and red details to the lips and eyes. The reverse roughly hollowed with visible tool marks and perforated along the edges for former attachment.

Size 7 inches H; 10-1/4 inches on custom mount. Provenance: Ex Los Angeles private collection.
