North Coast Peru, ca. 1000–1400 CE

An unusually large and graphically powerful Chancay slit‑tapestry panel, woven in fine hand‑spun camelid yarns in a sophisticated palette of golden tan, rose, deep blue, cream and brown. The design is a bold, perfectly organized grid of twelve standing supernatural warriors, each rendered with crisply articulated stepped headdress, outstretched arms, and sharply bent legs, holding a vertical staff in one hand and a trophy head in the other—classic high‑status Chancay iconography associated with martial and ceremonial power. The weaver has achieved excellent color contrast and clarity of line, with narrow vertical ladder bands and a continuous horizontal diamond border locking the composition together and underscoring the remarkable rhythmic repetition of the figures.

The technical quality is exceptional for the type: the slit‑tapestry structure is tight and even, the outlines remain clean with minimal bleeding between color areas, and the original long yellow fringe survives across the full width, adding movement and emphasizing the work’s likely origin as a prestigious garment or funerary hanging.

Overall preservation is very good for a textile of this age, with strong color retention, no distracting losses to the design field, and professional mounting on foamcore within a neutral mat (approx. 25 x 38.5 in) that presents the panel to full advantage and is ready for display. Dimensions of textile approx. 20 inches wide by 27 inches high (32 inches including fringe).

A museum‑quality Chancay textile of impressive scale and presence, with a complete and visually striking warrior tableau that is far superior in complexity and condition to the more fragmentary examples typically encountered on the market.
