Late Intermediate Period, Ca. 1000 to 1476 AD.    Plaited from split cane and totora reed in a tight diagonal twill with an openwork band pierced along the rim and a shallow hinged lid of matching construction, preserved together with its original working contents. Nestled within is a small carved wood loom finial in the form of a stylized bird, its blocky head and beak rendered with the pared-down, sober naturalism typical of Chancay wood carving, alongside a wooden weaving batten or beater stick used to press the weft into place on the backstrap loom, and several long woven bands or ties worked in bold geometric zigzags in red, purple, green, gold, and cream camelid-hair yarn. Surfaces throughout show the soft golden patina, expected reed breakage at the rim edges, and old fiber losses consistent with burial and long curation, while the woven bands retain vivid, unfaded color.

Measuring 3-1/2 in. H x 8-1/4 in. L x 6-1/4 in. W (8.9 x 21 x 15.9 cm)

The group finds its closest published parallel in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Chancay weaving basket from the Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection (accession 1979.206.950.1-.71), and compares as well with the work basket and weaving tools in the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami (accession 82.0003), both assembled from finds of this same central-coast Peruvian textile tradition. 
Provenance:  Ex. Collection of Leo and Beatrice Drimmer, acquired in the 1960’s.
